Backstory

So, I'm not exactly a health nut.  It's not hard to guess this if you saw me on the street.  I like to drink beer, watch TV... BBQ.  After a few too many drinks on NYE, I made a bet with a couple friends that I could go vegetarian for at least a month.  My buddy, Jason Russo, is a vegan.  Not only health reasons, but ethical, as well.  My buddy, Meaker, just thinks I'm a fat ass and wants me to lose weight.  The problem with any bet is that I shook hands.  Everyone knows what that means.  There's no going back, now.  Just giving up meat didn't seem like a totally fair bet.  I could eat cheese pizza and nachos all day!  Plus, I wanted to walk in Russo's shoes.  So, I upped the ante.  I'll go vegan.  No meat, no dairy, no animal by products.  For 30 days, starting the day after the Super Bowl.

Fast  forward to the day of Super Bowl: Audit of everything in my
house that wasn't vegan.  Below: Russo and I argue about honey.
Apparently, even bees have feelings, too.

You can guess who the vegan is!

Today, I'm up to almost $500 from a handful that say I can't make it 30 days.  Most are supportive, though.  That's why I created this blog with the help of my favorite social media expert, Laura Cobb.  To keep me honest and keep a running log of this social experiment that is "Brogan Goes Vegan". So, we shall see!

  1. Neil,
I have faith you can do this. I am not going to lie and say it will be easy but it is able to be done. You see I am also trying to go vegan I am starting day 15. I must say I feel great and most of the time I do not even want meat. I have lost almost 10 lbs so far.

Stay focused! The first week is the hardest. Prepare food for the week on the weekend. Let everyone know what you are doing and let them know you need their help. Have meals planned with recipes this will help with the "what should I make for dinner" questions. One more thing just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's healthy. Vegan foods have junk food too (sugary snacks etc) Read labels

I am proud of you that you are taking steps to become healthier. I am confident that you can do this and done right you will stay with your healthy habits.

    Good luck.

  2. (Russo's right bees do have feelings; especially right after I've swatted the hell out of one with my shoe ... )

I hope you take him to the cleaners, old buddy!

  4. Day 1 down, 29 to go...great job so far buddy!

I know we joked about honey, and you can argue either way. I never really gave it a whole lot of thought. It is pretty gross if you know where it comes from and I never liked it to begin with so it has been easy to avoid. I guess it depends on the reasons of why you are vegan.

Maybe this can explain it a little better. When it comes to being vegan for ethical reasons I think it’s about intent, not purity. Nobody is completely cruelty free regardless of what they eat or do, it’s impossible. Just by simply being here you will have adverse consequences on others, even though unintentional. But that doesn't mean that you should intentionally cause harm when it’s unnecessary and can easily be avoided. It’s simply about what you can control, and making choices in line with what you believe to be right and wrong.

Good news is most beers are vegan! http://www.barnivore.com/
